LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Six members of the Lander men’s tennis team returned to play over the weekend, competing in the main bracket of the UTR 2020 ITA Fall Circuit tournament at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Sophomore Jamieson Nathan and freshman Mikael Erler each advanced to the championship match, which ultimately was not played due to inclement weather forcing delays in the bracket.

To reach the championship, Erler dominated in four victories, never dropping a set. Nathan won his first two matches in straight sets before a retirement put him into the semifinals, where he ground out a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (5) win.

Sophomore Matthew De Groot was the third Bearcat to advance to the semifinals, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 win in the round of 32, before falling 4-6, 1-6 to Erler. Senior Thomas De Negri notched a pair of wins on Saturday, ending his tournament run on Sunday in the quarterfinals, while fellow senior Martyn Icke advanced to the round of 16. Freshman Joshua Gwynne fell in the round of 32.

Because each player registered for the tournament individually, the result will not count toward their overall record at Lander. The Bearcats are slated to return to action at the City of Florence Invitational Feb. 5-6.
